The best laid plans of mice and me

We made it to the ferry on time today.  We were all ready to buy our 6 day hopper passes to explore the lake and head up to a new village.  Ferry pulls up, we mask up, as we have been in public transportation settings, and we are promptly  turned away on the gang way.  Apparently specific type of mask mandates have been lifted everywhere except for open air ferry that cross regions.  What the hell!  And that is no where on the website unless you search for it.  We walked back a bit deer in the headlights unsure of our next move.  There was  no where to by the type they required and not the surgical ones we were wearing.  Bear in mind this was said by a captain whose mask was around his chin and every person on the boat took theirs off as soon as they walked on.  It was infuriating!

Plan B was take the bus into Como and ride the gondola up the mountain.  We trek up what is now a thousand stairs and not happy little ones.  Can’t find anywhere to buy tickets.  Discover we can buy them on board with cash but then we Check bus schedule and Bus doesn’t come for another 45 minutes. Plan C.  Head to grocery store, stop for lunch overlooking the water and then jump off the bridge.

Plan C was wonderful.  We got enough food for a few days which is nice as we feel a bit like we are scraping together each night.  We found the donkey again.  Will ran the food back while I hung around the area with the restaurant.  Our dining experience was delightful.  The waiter, Luca, had four kids and was amazed by our five.  The kids were so well behaved and it was such a relaxing lunch.  We felt like the waiter and entire area understood us and welcomed us instead of hoping we didn’t stay long.  My spritz and Prosecco may have added to that feeling, but it was there nonetheless.  Next stop was to the bridge to jump.

George had been asking non stop when it would happen and he was so surprised that Will had grabbed bathing suits when he dropped off food.  Margaret got up and bravely jumped right off.  She said she told herself not to think but just to jump.  It was awesome!  George needed a little encouragement, but the best part was that it didn’t come from us.  When he was first up there his little sisters and I were cheering  his name.  So by attempt 3, people on land, people in the water, people on boats were all chanting “George”.  A woman who ended up backing out herself, Alex, gives him a countdown up on the bridge.  It brought tears to my eyes to see all these people encouraging him and him being brave enough to do it.
